Moon & Star

Moon & Star has a huge history. It began at Sandwich in 1870, then Pioneer Glass Company,
Wilson Glass Company, Cooperative Flint Glass Company, Adams & Company, and U.S. Glass
Company in 1891. Moon & Star pieces in Opalescent colors were never mady by any of these
companies. L.G. Wright had pieces of Moon & Star made in Blue Opalescent as early as the 1940's
and had a rather long run. In 1962, the L. E. Smith Glass Company officially contracted with Joseph
Weishar of the Island Mould Company to produce some new pieces of “Moon and Star”. The agreements
held that the moulds would remain the property of Island Mould Company and L. E. Smith Glass
would pay royalties for each piece Weishar produced for them. The L.E. Smith glass company
never owned any of the Moon & Star moulds. They only leased them from the Weishars to press
Moon & Star pieces. Most pieces from L.E. Smith are marked with the letter S on them. These
pieces are referred to as the “Smith” pieces. In 1988, Weishar Enterprises produced miniature
water sets in various colors. The Weishar produced glass grew into a collectable line introduced
in the early 1990’s. This collectible line reproduced some of the earlier more popular pieces of
“Moon and Star”, but were all marked with the Weishar signature which allowed the earlier Wright
and Smith pieces to retain their value. Weishar still produces the “Moon and Star” pattern, however
many of the pieces are in new colors, previously unavailable and all are marked with the Weishar
signature. The piece shown has the Weishar signature on it and was made in 1996. None of Moon
& Star pieces in Opalescent colors are considered antique. They are currently a collectible pattern only.
