Northwood Dew Drop
The item shown is the "Open Sugar". This is a very rare Northwood pattern.
It is shown in the illustated ad below that is dated 1903. In this ad the item is
called a Deep Open Sugar in a Dew Drop design. I have seen this ad many
times but have never seen the actual piece before until this year when I was
able to purchase it. Notice in this ad there are only two items that mention
the Dew Drop pattern. Hobnail patterns have been made by many companies
over the years and normally it would be almost impossible to tell who made this
Hobnail piece. But fortunately this Northwood pattern has a distinguishing feature
that other Hobnail patterns do not have. In the photo on the right, notice the single
round raised hobnail in the center of the bottom. In the illustrated ad below notice
there is ruffled bowl also mentioned in the Dew Drop design. These are the only
two shapes known in this pattern. The ruffled bowl will also have the single raised
hobnail in the center of the bottom. The ruffled bowl is shown in Purple Slag
in "Northwood the Wheeling Years" page 83, item 33. The single hobnail is clearly
visible and shown here in the bottom photo.
